Set in America, a first for the franchise, Far Cry 5 offers players total freedom to navigate a serene-looking yet deeply twisted world as the new junior deputy of fictional Hope County, Montana. Players will find that their arrival accelerates a years-long silent coup by a fanatical doomsday cult, the Project at Eden’s Gate, igniting a violent takeover of the county. Under siege and cut off from the rest of the world, players will join forces with residents of Hope County and form the Resistance. Far Cry 5 is rated M for Mature.

Why did the Far Cry team decide on Montana for the game’s setting?
The Far Cry franchise is about frontiers, and for Far Cry 5 the team wanted a place that was beautiful but also that felt remote. After making a short list of potential locations, the team got on a plane and headed to Montana. Once they started to meet the people, to hear its history and to go fishing and hunting, the team realized they got it right on the first shot. Far Cry was going to Montana.
What real life locations can be found in Far Cry 5?
Like many forms of entertainment, Far Cry 5 is a work of fiction. Montana was used as inspiration for creating Far Cry’s version of a small town in America. And while Montana has the varied topography that makes it a great setting for the game, the team took its own creative liberties in designing a small town to ensure the game is fun for gamers.
